eSIM, ATMs & QRIS
General tips that work for most visitors. We don't recommend specific operators we haven't checked.
Getting online
- An eSIM bought before you fly is the easiest option if your phone supports it. Check that the plan covers Indonesia and how much data you get.
- Physical SIM cards are sold at the airport and phone shops; registration with your passport is required.
- Keep a little offline: save your hotel address and plan, in case signal drops in rural areas.
Cash & ATMs
- Withdraw rupiah from bank ATMs in the city; your home bank may charge a fee.
- If the ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choosing rupiah is usually cheaper.
- Use licensed money changers, count your notes at the counter, and avoid street offers with 'special rates'.
QRIS
- QRIS is the national QR code you'll see at shops, cafés and many warung.
- Some Malaysian and Singaporean banking apps can scan QRIS through cross-border payment links. Ask your bank whether yours does, and what rate it uses.
- Keep some cash anyway: not every stall, parking attendant or gate accepts QR.
